Whoa, here's something you don't hear every day. This is some bizarre stuff, and a monumental effort from this prolific band (third album of 2008). Clocking in at a dizzying 2 hours and 18 minutes, it might take a few sittings to get through this. However, the incredible degrees of experimentation and WTF atmosphere *might* just be enough to keep you occupied for the entire time!

Very raw and harsh sounding, often incorporating ambient and drone elements, the album sways between anguished black metal, and mesmerizing hypnotic walls of noise, sometimes drifting into post-rock atmosphere, leaving you staring off into space until the next burst of sheer intensity snaps you back out of it. They take great influence from Weakling, as they are listed first in the "Thanks" section. Something different!

----------------------------------------

A relatively new band to the scene, Ride for Revenge have definitely defined themselves early and found a style that suits them well. Not many other bands can pull off this evil, dark, twisted musical massacre. The album is very doomy and the only death metal I hear is in the Necros Christos-like vocals, often using an echoing effect to create an air of reverb, further helping to solidify the creepy atmosphere Ride for Revenge are going for. Using very hollow-sounding drums that stick out from the rest of the instruments, I get a very ritualistic feel, like we're sacrificing a young virgin (or something to that effect). Heavy on the bass, the albums seems to pulse with a dark, dirty throbbing beat, plodding along, ultimately leading the listener into eternal darkness. Really cool stuff.

---------------------------------------

A cult record from Poland in 1992, this is considered a demo, but its 40+ minutes of play time and professional-sounding production tell me it's an album. Having only managed to release two demos and a full-length, it is a surprise why Taranis aren't around even today. For the most part, this demo consists of slow to mid-paced Black Metal, often flirting with doom. Very deliberate, Taranis is in no hurry to finish recording, and while it can be quite slow paced at times, still manages to mesmerizingly hold the listener's attention throughout the entire 40 minutes. Sometimes heavy and destructive, especially when combined with the putrid vocals, Obscurity just oozes evil filth. Recommended for those who want something hard-hitting, while still relatively tame. Awesome start to an awesome band.

----------------------------------------

A brand new band, having only released their first demo just a little while ago, here we have another fantastic band playing that special brand of black metal, dubbed "Cascadian Black Metal". No, they're not from Canada, but sound similar in atmosphere to greats such as Skagos.

There's a lot going on in this two song, 24 minute demo, and I dig every minute of it. There is definitely that atmospheric hint to it, but the guitar tone is a little fuller, and with more energy than other generic atmospheric bands out there. I find the atmosphere invoked to be especially interesting, considering how I mentioned it was energetic, but at the same time depressing and exuding a strong sense of hopelessness. In fact, they self proclaim their music to be that of a "godless world". When listening, you get the feeling that nobody else is out there, and it's just you, all alone. The demo takes you through the experiences you'll face, changing pace, often erupting into fiery passion, with thought-provoking down-tempo ambient sections dispersed all throughout, keeping this demo interesting to the very end.

Recommended.

-------------------------------

Here we have a relatively unknown and underrated black metal band from Germany. They play an orthodox style of black metal, focusing heavily on a stripped down feel to create a rawer sound. All the instruments stand out from one another, the bass seems almost nonexistent, the guitars really stand out and are the highlight, and the vocals carry that demonic high-pitched growling. I noticed that Nox Pestes have a penchant for meshing riffs and pacing with the vocals. Often shifting from fast, technical riffing parts to slower, atmospheric sections, the vocals usually lead the transitions, making for a very cool effect. The riffing gets slower and slower and farther and farther away, then a drawn-out shriek kicks in, and as it gets louder, the music gets faster and more intense. Great effect!

Here we have some prime depressive BM from... Iceland? The hell? As far as I know, there are less than a hundred metal bands in Iceland. However, that does not mean the place can't churn out some magnificent works of Black Metal.

This is some of the best depressive stuff I've heard in years. First off, the full-sounding guitar tone on Vanskapt is absolutely perfect for the atmosphere and music the band plays, and is among my favorite tones for getting mesmerized with entrancing, dark, and mysterious soundscapes. There are so many layers to this music, and once you think there are enough guitars or riffing going on, another lead bursts through the darkness, clawing at the edges of your mind, slowly pulling you in... Fantastically crafted, with tremendous, suffocating atmosphere and gloomy, miserable riffs, mashed with the 10+ minute song structures makes Vanskapt a truly powerful debut, and promises a very successful future.
